Stearic Acid

Stearic acid is one of the main long-chain fatty acids that make up fats and oils. It exists in the form of glycerides in animal fats, oils and some vegetable oils. Stearic acid can be obtained by hydrolysis of these oils.

Stearic acid is a fatty acid widely found in nature and has the chemical properties of general carboxylic acids.

Almost all fats and oils contain varying amounts of stearic acid, and the content in animal fats is higher, such as butter, which can reach 24%. Vegetable oils contain less stearic acid, with tea oil at 0.8% and palm oil at 6%, but the content in cocoa butter is as high as 34%.

Application

Food: Stearic acid is used as a lubricant and defoaming agent in the food industry, and is also the raw material for the food additives glyceryl stearate, sorbitan stearate, and sucrose ester.

Industry: Stearic acid is widely used as plastic cold-resistant plasticizer, stabilizer, surfactant, release agent, rubber vulcanization accelerator, etc.

Medicine: Stearic acid is used in medicine to prepare ointments, suppositories, etc. In the laboratory, it can be used to measure the hardness of water and is also a solvent for measuring relative molecular weight.
