Fatty Alcohols Explained: C12-C18 Chain Lengths, Specifications and Sourcing Guide

Oct. 10, 2026

What Are Fatty Alcohols?

Fatty alcohols are long-chain primary alcohols produced from natural fats, oils and their derivatives. In the oleochemical industry the term covers a family of saturated and unsaturated alcohols with carbon chains ranging from C8 to C22, most commonly C12 to C18. They are not the same as the short-chain alcohols used in beverages or fuel; their long hydrocarbon tail gives them surfactant, emulsifying and emollient properties that make them essential intermediates for detergents, personal care, lubricants and industrial processing.

Why Chain Length Drives Performance

The single most important specification when buying a fatty alcohol is the carbon chain distribution. A C12-C14 lauryl range behaves very differently from a C16-C18 cetyl-stearyl range: shorter chains deliver stronger detergency and faster foaming, while longer chains provide creamier emollience, higher melting points and better structuring. Lauryl alcohol (C12) is a backbone for surfactants such as sodium lauryl sulfate. Cetyl (C16) and stearyl (C18) alcohols dominate cosmetic emulsions and industrial lubricant additives. Cetearyl blends (C16/C18) are widely used where a balance of body and spreadability is required.

Key Specifications to Check on a COA

When a supplier sends a certificate of analysis, several numbers matter more than others. Hydroxyl value indicates the concentration of active alcohol and is the primary quality marker. Iodine value reflects the degree of unsaturation: a low iodine value means a more saturated, more oxidation-stable product, which is usually preferred for color-critical applications. Acid value should be very low in a finished fatty alcohol, since residual acidity signals incomplete reduction. Carbon chain distribution, typically reported as a GC profile, tells you whether the batch matches the grade you ordered. Color (APHA or Gardner) and moisture round out the picture, particularly for cosmetic and food-adjacent uses.

Natural Versus Synthetic Origin

Fatty alcohols can be produced from petrochemical ethylene or from renewable oils such as palm kernel oil and coconut oil. The renewable route, based on methyl ester hydrogenation, yields even-numbered chains and is the mainstream source for C12-C18 alcohols. Buyers sourcing for sustainability claims should request documentation of the feedstock origin and mass balance certification where applicable.

Sourcing and Logistics Considerations

Fatty alcohols are typically shipped as liquids in heated ISO tanks or in solid form as flakes, pastilles or drums, depending on the melting point of the grade. C12-C14 grades are liquid at ambient temperature and can move in standard drums or IBCs; C16-C18 grades are solid and usually require melting before use. Confirm packaging, melting point, storage temperature and shelf life before booking. Keeping containers sealed and away from moisture protects both color and hydroxyl value during transit.

Applications at a Glance

Beyond surfactants and cosmetics, fatty alcohols act as lubricant additives, plasticizers in polymer processing, defoamers and emulsifiers in the textile and leather industry, and as intermediates for ethoxylates and sulfates used across cleaning products. Because one chain range can serve many end markets, buyers often standardize on two or three grades rather than a broad portfolio.
