Propylene glycol (PG, also written as 1,2-propanediol) is one of the most widely traded oleochemical intermediates in the world. Because the same molecule is sold into pharmaceuticals, food, cosmetics, unsaturated polyester resins, antifreeze and aircraft de-icing fluids, buyers often receive quotations that look comparable on price but describe very different products. Before discussing freight terms or volume discounts, confirm the grade and the specification standard behind it. That single decision determines the documentation you need at customs, the storage conditions on your site, and the claims you are allowed to make to your own customers.
Pharmacopoeia grades are produced and tested against a published monograph. In North America this is typically USP or USP-NF; in Europe it is the European Pharmacopoeia, usually written as EP or Ph. Eur. A pharmacopoeia lot must satisfy identity, assay, water content and residue-on-ignition limits, and it normally ships with a batch Certificate of Analysis plus GMP or ISO declarations. These grades carry the heaviest documentation burden and the tightest batch-to-batch consistency requirement.
Food and cosmetic grades, often labelled FCC, E1520 or simply food grade, follow a similar monograph structure but serve a different regulatory pathway. Buyers in this segment should expect a food safety statement, allergen and GMO declarations, and, for European customers, a REACH registration number on the Safety Data Sheet.
Technical and industrial grades are specified by the producer rather than by a pharmacopoeia. They are entirely correct for resins, heat transfer fluids and de-icing, but they may show higher water or colour values and are not intended for contact with food or skin. Confusing a technical grade with a pharma grade is the most common and most expensive sourcing error in this product family.
Whatever the grade, read the COA line by line and check that each value actually supports your application:
- Purity or assay, usually stated on a dry or anhydrous basis
- Water content by Karl Fischer titration, which affects both resin curing and shelf life
- Colour, reported as Pt-Co, APHA haze or Gardner, which matters for clear cosmetic and pharmaceutical formulations
- Specific gravity and refractive index, useful as quick identity checks on receipt
- Acidity or acid value, an early indicator of degradation in storage
- Heavy metals and residual solvents, for regulated applications
- Chloride and sulfate residues, which can interfere with sensitive catalysts
Where a value is described as typical rather than guaranteed, ask for the guaranteed specification in writing. A typical figure is an average, not a commitment, and it will not help you if a later batch arrives at the edge of the range.
Pharmaceutical and personal care: pharmacopoeia grade, low colour, low water, full regulatory dossier. Food and flavour carriers: food grade PG with FCC compliance. Unsaturated polyester resin and gelcoat: technical grade, where colour matters less but moisture control still governs cure performance. Antifreeze and de-icing fluids: technical grade, usually blended, with emphasis on freeze point and corrosion inhibitor package. Heat transfer and HVAC systems: inhibited technical grade, where additive compatibility matters more than nominal assay.
Propylene glycol is hygroscopic. Keep it in sealed, lined steel or HDPE drums, IBC totes, or flexitanks for bulk shipments, and close containers between transfers to avoid moisture pickup and odour absorption. A complete import file should include the Certificate of Analysis for the exact batch, a Safety Data Sheet in the destination language, packing list and commercial invoice, and, where applicable, a REACH registration and a statement of origin. A batch number on the drum label that does not match the COA is a frequent and entirely avoidable cause of customs delay.
SINOFO (Zhongfu) is a China-based exporter of glycerin, propylene glycol, fatty acids and other oleochemical raw materials, supplying B2B buyers across North America and Europe. We quote against harmonised specifications rather than a single blanket price list, so the grade you receive matches the grade your process actually needs, supported by batch-level COAs, multilingual SDS documentation and consistent paperwork for repeat orders.
If you are evaluating propylene glycol or glycerin for an upcoming production cycle, send us your target specification, annual volume and destination port, and our technical team will reply with a grade recommendation and a compliant documentation package. Please use the contact form on sinofogroup.com and reference PG specification review in your message.
