Glycerin recovered from biodiesel transesterification is a by-product stream, not a finished raw material. Depending on the feedstock and the process, crude glycerin may carry only 80 to 90 percent glycerol, with the balance made up of water, residual methanol, soap, fatty acid methyl esters, inorganic salts and colour bodies. Before it can be sold into food, pharmaceutical, personal care or technical channels, the glycerol content has to be raised and the impurities brought under control.
Most refiners work in stages. The first is pretreatment: acidulation or neutralisation splits soap, releases free fatty acids and allows salts and suspended solids to be separated. Methanol, if present, is stripped and recovered. This step protects downstream equipment and reduces fouling.
The second stage is concentration and distillation. Water is removed under vacuum to avoid thermal degradation, and the concentrated glycerol is then distilled, often in a thin-film or short-path unit, to separate heavy residues and colour bodies. Distillation is what lifts the product from technical grade toward the higher purities expected in food and pharmaceutical applications.
The third stage is polishing. Bleaching with activated carbon or clay removes residual colour and odour, while ion exchange reduces ionic impurities and can help bring the glycerin within the limits set for food and pharmacopoeial grades. Glycerin intended for regulated use is then tested against the relevant specification.
Refined glycerin is commonly offered in technical, food and pharmaceutical grades. Technical grade serves industrial uses such as alkyd resins, antifreeze blends and general humectant duties. Food grade meets the limits set for food contact and is used in beverages, confectionery and baked goods. Pharmaceutical grade meets the stricter limits of the relevant pharmacopoeia and is used in oral and topical preparations. The grade, not just the assay, determines whether a material is suitable for a given application, so matching grade to end use is the first decision in any purchase.
What buyers should track is not only glycerol assay but the full impurity picture. Key parameters usually include glycerol content, water, ash or sulphated ash, chloride, heavy metals, colour expressed on the APHA or Gardner scale, and odour. For food and pharmaceutical grades, additional limits may apply, including diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol content. Consistency batch to batch matters as much as the headline number: a specification is only useful if the material reliably meets it.
Because the starting crude glycerin varies with feedstock and season, a refinery that can adjust its pretreatment and distillation conditions is better placed to deliver a stable refined product than one that treats all crude as identical. This is why sourcing refined glycerin is as much about the supplier process control as about the certificate of analysis.
When comparing offers of refined glycerin, buyers typically confirm the declared grade, the assay and impurity limits, the packaging format and the documentation that travels with the shipment. A supplier able to provide a consistent grade, reliable documentation and stable packaging reduces the re-testing and re-qualification burden on the buyer own QC team.
SINOFO Group supplies bulk and packaged glycerin, propylene glycol, fatty acids, fatty alcohols and related oleochemical raw materials to buyers in North America, Europe and beyond. Our team works with refinery partners to hold a consistent grade, ship in the packaging format the buyer needs, and provide the documents required for incoming inspection. If you are sourcing refined glycerin or another oleochemical raw material, send us your specification and target market and we will revert with available grades, packaging options and lead times.
